School Programs All Children’s Forest school programs are designed to meet California State Science Content Standards. Field trips can range from two to four hours and are offered seven days a week, year–round. Schedule your field trip today as our annual calendar fills up quickly! Pathways to Stewardship is a multi–faceted curriculum that helps Children’s Forest staff, school teachers, and students become partners in the learning process. This full–year curriculum includes school–site activities, teacher workshops, field trips in the fall and winter to Children’s Forest, and can include a camping and service learning option. Through legitimate scientific investigation of the forest and its surroundings, this curriculum helps students develop a sense of stewardship for our environment. This curriculum is designed to meet key California State Science Standards. Born To Burn! – Join a Children’s Forest naturalist for an exploration of fire on the mountains. Learn about the complexities of fire ecology and fire management while visiting sites that burned in the 2003 Old Fire. Through interactive games and discussions, your students will learn that the San Bernardino National Forest was indeed Born to Burn! The curriculum associated with this field trip was written by Children’s Forest staff members and is now in use in 30 states. The curriculum guide is available for purchase. The Web of Life is a single day adventure that focuses on the ecological ties between plants, animals, and the rest of the forest. Learn how ancient trees sap energy from the sun while insects and hummingbirds jockey for position on wildflowers, unwittingly spreading pollen. Learn about producers, consumers, decomposers, food chains, and more.
Snowshoe Field Trip – Children’s Forest provides the snowshoes, the fun, and the experience of professional naturalists when you sign your class up for our winter ecology tour. Students will glide across the snow while learning how plants, animals, and humans adapt to winter. Finding the Wild Things is a field trip designed to teach students about wildlife on the San Bernardino National Forest. Mountain lions, raccoons, bears, rattlesnakes, lizards, birds, and more inhabit Children’s Forest and we would like to teach your students how each of those animals have adapted to their environments, where they live, what they eat, and how to read the signs of their presence.
Service Learning Projects are periodically available for your students. These can be incorporated with other field trips. Past projects have included restoration by planting trees and wildflowers, erosion control projects, and recreation site restoration. Help your students make the San Bernardino National Forest a better place than when they arrived! Custom Field Trips are available and can be tailored to fit the needs of your group.
