Getting involved is a great way to learn about wildfires and how they affect the forest. It’s also a wonderful way to involve your family, church group, or other organization in caring for the forest. The San Bernardino National Forest Association: The SBNFA operates six volunteer programs that give you an opportunity to give back. They are Fire Lookout Hosts, Off-Highway Vehicle volunteers, the Big Bear Discovery Center, Children’s Forest, Off Highway Vehicle Education Outreach, and Fire Education volunteers. To find out more, e-mail Sara Miggins, Executive Director, at smiggins@fs.fed.us. The Forest Service: The Forest Service will need volunteers to help with on-the-ground restoration projects. The Children's Forest Association is currently working with the San Bernardino National Forest to involve people and communities in this restoration. Call (909) 382-2777 for more information. Take Pride in America: Through Take Pride in America, a national initiative, you can make a pledge to donate hours to public lands projects. Register online at www.takepride.gov. Fire Safe Councils: Most mountain and foothill communities at risk from wildfire have active Fire Safe Councils that are dedicated to mitigating risk and educating residents how to protect their homes and lives. To find the Fire Safe Council in your area, go to www.firesafecouncil.org.
